Riots in New York

The Declaration of Independence is copied and spread throughout the thirteen colonies. When it reaches New York City on July 9, 1776, it causes a riot. George Washington marches his troops to the city green to hear the declaration read. The enthusiastic crowd, whipped into a frenzy of patriotic fervor, tears down a nearby statue of King George III. They cut off the statue’s head and mount it on a spike in front of the local tavern. The rest of the statue is melted down and molded into more than forty-two thousand musket balls, to be put to use against the British.

A few of the 1776 copies of the Declaration of Independence still exist. One will be found by a Philadelphia man in 1989, who discovers it hidden in the back of a picture frame he picks up at a flea market for four dollars. It’s in perfect condition and sells at auction for $8.1 million in 2000. If you find any other copies of the Declaration of Independence, please notify Finn Greenquill—he’ll give you a good price.
